THINK BEFORE YOU SPEAK

Ps. 141:3 Set a guard over my mouth, Lord; keep watch over the door of my lips

Have you ever had a plan but depended on someone else to make it work? Your spouse or auntie plans a great family vacation. The first six days are fantastic but the last day something goes wrong and you miss out on a play or dinner or day at Universal Studios. When it fails you blame or criticize the person who planned it? Then, regret your words. You forgot about the six good days and let that one thing that did not go right ruin the vacation.

You blow up and get angry; No control over your words that flow. You are to ask God to set a guard over your mouth. Meaning, you keep your mouth closed when you get irritated, angry, or upset. Seek God for the right words before you speak. Let Him help you deliver those right words with the right tone.

When the Word tells us, God is faithful; that you are never alone, He is always with you—believe it. Even when it comes to your speech. Phil. 2:13 “for it is God who works in you to do and act in order to do His purpose.”

Be quick to listen and slow to speak!

The Bible says foolish people only want to express their opinion; they’re not interested in understanding (Prov. 18:2). The tongue is a small member of our body. Remember we are many members of one body…someone in here is the tongue. And it only takes a few words to start a fire that is hard to contain…one word can cause chaos and disruption within the Church family.

Last scripture…Prov. 16:23 intelligent people think before they speak. Then what they say is more persuasive. Kind words are like honey—sweet to the taste and good for your health.”

Remember that your words spoken in anger stir up trouble.

But, my word to you is it’s not just words you initiate; but it’s your words in response to what someone else says or your reaction to what they do. When someone makes fun or says hurtful, inconsiderate words and you laugh or don’t correct that person, then your tongue and lips are just as hurtful as the person who spoke.

This week, let your words as well as your response and actions build up your spouse, your children, your supervisor, the grocery store clerk, friends…let God open the door of your lips before you speak.  How do you do that? Just think before you speak.  Let what you say and how you say it be pleasing to God and encouraging to others.
